Parent Organizer

Job description

Some flexibility with start date, however we are looking to fill the position ASAP.

Primary responsibilities:

This is the primary staff role of Coleman’s parent organizing project. The position will supervise parent leaders, and report to the Director of Organizing. We are seeking an experienced organizer and an experienced program coordinator/director who can ensure that PMAC develops and meets annual membership, leadership development, campaign and academic support goals. Major areas of responsibility include:

  1. Program Development & Evaluation
  2. Development of Winning, Parent-led Organizing campaigns
  3. Support Growth of PMAC’s membership base in SFUSD high schools
  4. Coordinate the Leadership Development program for members
  5. Intergenerational work with Coleman’s youth membership
  6. Documentation and Data Entry
  7. Coalition & Alliance Building

Qualifications:

  • Ideally we are looking for someone with concrete parent organizing experience. We will also consider applicants with at least three years community organizing (or a combination of organizing and leadership development) experience with other populations.
  • Passion for social justice and improving the lives of low income and working class families of color.
  • Demonstrated respect for the culture and leadership of parents.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, membership base building organizing models.
  • Knowledge of a San Francisco Unified School District, School Site Councils, English Language Advisory Councils, PTA’s and other school site specific governing structures.
  • Experience with leadership development skills training and popular education, including curriculum dev.
  • Highly organized; able to achieve goals in multiple work areas within established timelines.
  • Experience and ease working with people of different class, race, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Flexibility, lots of energy, and an ability to flourish in a fast-paced, action oriented, environment.
  • Willingness to attend night and weekend activities.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Conversational Spanish (minimum).

  • Bi-lingual (Spanish)
  • Case management experience
  • Experience with policy campaigns
  • College degree
  • Strong writing skills, including grant writing
  • A sense of humor
  • Familiarity with San Francisco communities
  • Knowledge of education justice policy issues
  • Owns/has access to a car
  • Parent of a student(s) in an SFUSD public school

Salary: $43,000-$46,000. Depends on Experience; Benefits: Medical, dental, vision, acupuncture/chiropractic

Coleman Advocates is a forty-year old community organization of parents, youth and family advocates uniting to make San Francisco a city of justice, hope, and opportunity for all children. We take action together, to hold city officials accountable to our needs: quality public schools for all students, affordable housing for all families, a city budget that is fair to working families, and good jobs that help stop community violence. We combine grassroots family organizing, parent and youth leadership development, and policy and budget advocacy to improve the lives of low and moderate-income families, including families of color, in San Francisco. We have won millions of dollars in family safety net services from the city budget, seven health clinics in our local high schools, universal health care for children in SF and a national model for local childcare support. We are a fast-paced, vibrant and racially diverse non-profit organization. Evening and weekend hours are sometimes required; staff schedules are quite flexible.

Parents Making a Change(PMAC) is Coleman’s parent organizing project. PMAC is a membership-based group of poor and working class parents, predominantly Latino and African American, organizing out of San Francisco public high schools. PMAC develops and leads campaigns that improve the lives of the city’s children and their families and build the collective power of parents to assert their needs in the halls of power. PMAC has worked on many campaign issues from implementing Reading Partners at several school sites, building the power of parents on school site councils and ELAC’s, helping pass a resolution to ensure all SF students graduate college and career ready, and a policy change to decrease suspensions in SF schools for students of color. PMAC is currently working on education justice issues related to restorative practices and literacy.
